Modern day IVF procedures have very few risks associated with them.
The most important risk in this technique is multiple pregnancies. There is a chance of having triplets in about 5% cases and of having twins in about 20% cases. Such children are expected to be underweight and immature because of pre-term delivery.
Now a days, mostly 1 or 2 good embryos are transfeered. In fact, at Baheti Hospital, we try to grow the embryos up to Blastocyst stage and then transfer just one good quality Blastocyst ( rarely two). About 5% women may have hyperstimulation of ovaries because of hormonal treatment and this may cause serious problems. To minimize this complication, such woman needs to be kept under the constant supervision of the treating doctor.
Again, with better quality hormone injections and customized stimulation protocols the incidences of hyperstimulation have come down in recent years. We follow a mild or minimal stimulation protocol in most of the patients so that only sufficient number of eggs are produced.
