Assisted Conception or ART
| |
The term Assisted Conception or ART (Assisted Reproduction Technology) includes a wide variety of treatments for childlessness like Ovarian Stimulation and Ovulation Induction, Intrauterine Insemination, IVF, ICSI, and Egg/Embryo donation.
Ovulation Induction with Follicular Monitoring

Hormonal injections are used to stimulate ovaries to produce more than one egg/follicle. Women are made to produce and release more eggs (simultaneous US monitoring) to achieve a better chance of conceiving by timed intercourse. The average chance of conception is from 10-25%.

| Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) |
IUI can be planned for those women who have their fallopian tubes patent. By using a special technique good and motile sperms are washed and separated from semen sample. These sperms are then placed high in uterus through cervix using a fine catheter around the time of egg release. The success rate following this procedure can vary between 10-20%.

| Microsurgery for Infertility |
| We have the facility and expertise to perform microsurgery for blocked fallopian tubes and clear obstruction in the passage of sperms in men. |

| In vitro fertilization (IVF) |
In this technique, various hormonal injections (hMG, FSH, rFSH, GnRH agonists or antagonists) are given so that, more than 3-5 egg forms in ovaries. After maturity of these eggs, they are collected by ultrasound-guided aspiration, and fertilized in vitro using her husband's washed sperms. Embryos are grown inside a CO2 incubator for about 72 hours. 2 to 3 good quality embryos are then transferred into the uterus. |
| This whole procedure is done outside the human body in test tubes and hence it is called test-tube baby technique. The success rate of this technique is about 25% to 35%. Confirmation of pregnancy is done after 14 days by checking for the serum level of bhCG. |

| IVF Treatment for low number/absence of sperms (ICSI) |

In many cases of absence of sperms, there is blockage in the fine tubes of testes. Sperms can still be collected by minor surgery from these tubes (PESA, MESA, TESE) and frozen-stored for future use. Such sperms are used for fertilizing the eggs by a technique called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), wherein a single sperm is injected into each egg. After fertilization by ICSI, embryos are cultured and transferred similar to embryos produced by IVF procedure.

| Preservation of Embryos by Freezing |
Surplus embryos are safely preserved, by freezing them in liquid nitrogen at -196'C using a special procedure and equipment. These embryos can be kept in cold-storage for 5-7 years for future use. This option reduces the cost of future attempts of IVF treatment.
| |
| Egg/Embryo donation |
In cases of pre-mature ovarian failure or other genetic problems, test tube baby treatment can be done by using donated eggs/embryos.
Success rate
The success rate in test tube baby technique is equivalent to the nature's conception rate of 25% to 35%. With every attempt, the overall pregnancy rate increases. With three attempts, the cumulative success rate rises. The success rate in woman is reduced drastically after 35 years of age.
